Most people know that the body is made up of energy, however many of us fail to realize that there are energy centers within the body called Chakras. Aligned with the spine, from torso to head (and even extending below the feet and above the head) these centers correspond with different colors, characteristics, abilities, and when focused on have the ability to enhance activities, awareness, and overall Life Energy.
Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘wheel’, which refers to a spinning sphere or vortex of energy, which later became associated with the term ‘wheel of light’. Each Chakra is a center of activity that receives, assimilates, and expresses Life Force Energy (known as Chi, Ki or Prana in other languages). The Chakras are spirals of light that bring energy into the body and remove old energy from the body. There are seven of these major spinning vortexes stacked in a column of energy that spans from the base of the spine to the top of the head. (There are also in excess of 300 minor Chakras throughout the body including the hands, feet, fingertips and shoulders.) The seven Chakras were first described nearly 2600 years ago, in ancient sacred texts known as the Upanishads. Most of the current Western knowledge of the Chakras comes from the Sanskrit texts.
Since the Chakras are the ‘center’ of our physical bodies and involved with all of its physical, mental, emotional and spiritual processes. Our Chakras can become blocked or clogged due to stress or anxiety; therefore it's no wonder why they are so important to our well-being. If one or more Chakras are out of ‘balance’, over time this can lead to physical, emotional or mental illness and disease. It is believed that the use of gemstones or crystals along with meditation, visualization, and other body work will help balance these energy centres, keeping the Chakras aligned and cleared thereby promoting a sense of balance and health, which can improve our lives on many different levels.
For example, if the Heart Chakra is blocked or unbalanced, then it may present itself with difficulties forming good relationships with those we love, or it may leave us feeling little or no empathy for other humans, animals or our environment. On the other hand, it may cause us to be overly emotional, in which we take things too much to ‘heart’ and take things very personally, which can lead to unnecessary suffering and worry. There is some medical evidence that people, who are happy, stress and worry free, have a decreased incidence of developing heart disease. Thus, understanding the relationships between our subtle energy bodies and our physical bodies can help us live happier and healthier lives.
A colour was attributed to each of the seven Chakras and combined with the colour of crystals for a simple healing system. Crystals that are the same colour as a Chakra will enhance its natural qualities and energy vibration. Clear Quartz crystals may be used for all the Chakras. Other stones such as Agates, Calcites, Fluorites, Jaspers, Quartz and Tourmalines are found in many natural colors and may thus be used with in conjunction with the Chakra colors they relate to. All stones resonate to harmonize and balance energy in countless beneficial ways.
